May 2016

Sunday, May 1
May started out with a Mother's Day celebration and a birthday party for Grandma!
Love these women in my life!
Claire and Dorian had so much fun hanging out in this little cupboard under the steps!  Silly kids.  Dorian talked nearly the whole way home about wanting to do that again sometime.  :)
Hand, Foot and Mouth
Mason came down with a fever and after visiting the doctor, we concluded that he had strep only to find out days later that it was actually Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease.  Poor kid couldn't swallow without crying for a couple of days and was contagious for a week.  It's a month later and his skin is still healing from where the spots were.
Biking to School
For the first time, Dorian and Levi biked to school!  I said prayers that they would make it home safely and so far it's been going well!  There was one day when Levi's bike broke down and Dorian let him ride his and walked Levi's bike home for him.  I was quite proud of how that was handled!
Sioux Center News
Levi made the news!  Their school was planting trees that were donated to them for the city's 125th celebration.
Nap time
Sleeping children are so adorable.  Most days Mason does well without a nap and is sleeping better at night.  But there are days when a nap is necessary.
May 6
Warm enough to take out the water table!!!
Athletic events
May 7 was a busy day of different athletic events.  Dorian was shooting hoops at home before we headed off to cheer Dad on at the Siouxperman Triathalon.
Nice shot!  And the crabapple trees were beautiful!
Swam 300 yards. Biked 25k. Ran 5k.  Finished strong!

Both boys had a soccer game and Nathan is the coach for Dorian's team.
Dorian and Levi's first track meet!  They each tried the long jump, 50 and 100 yard dash!

Mason had fun cheering!

May 8, Mother's Day
Flowers, notes and flying a kite with my boys!

Celebration Class
Mason and I had fun at the Kindermusik celebration class showing Daddy what we did this year!
Mason even read his wheels on the bus book that I made for him!
Reading
It's not often that the time and desire allows for me to read a book.  But this one intrigued me and was recommended by a friend.  I came away from it with some new ideas of things to try, including a meal of rice and beans.  Only rice and beans.  It was not only a good reminder to our kids but maybe even more so to us of how blessed we are to have so much delicious food and always as much as we need.  Praying for a better perspective and to be grateful in all things.  This parenting stuff is hard and we are constantly learning.

Mowing has begun
The approximately weekly chore of mowing is certainly more fun since Mason now mows with us!  How cute is that.

Saturday, May 14
Watching more soccer games in the afternoon!
Enjoying a birthday party for Aniah, Eden, Adria (and their cousin Henrik) in the evening!  The boys thought the inflatable and the pinata were the most exciting parts.

Sunday, May 15
Our afternoon didn't go quite as planned, but it was still a good family adventure!  The plan was for the boys and I to bike to Sandy Hallow and Nathan was going to run and meet up with us there.  I only made it half way before my bike broke down.  So Mason and I walked for the rest of the way and Nathan ran back home to get our van.
Blessings
I love having this blog because it helps me daily to think about the blessings in my life.  These flowers from the boys were at the top of my list on this particular day.
Last soccer games of the season
Tired out on his break!

Dorian played against his friend, Brady!

It was fun to watch both of their games and to see them putting forth their best effort!!!

Field Trip
I was thankful to have pictures to look at and hear stories about Levi's field trip to the Sioux Falls Zoo!

Sock Puppets
I was waiting outside of Levi's classroom, excited to make sock puppets with him, and found this picture of myself!  Loved it!

Now that's an awesome sock puppet and a perfect reading buddy.  :)
Theme Extravaganza
The 7:00 program put Mason right to sleep!
Every year the boys have this program, I feel so grateful for their school.  Over 500 kids praising Jesus through their music! And Dorian and Levi both did great!
Babysitting
I love it that I can swap babysitting hours with Heidi.  It was funny to me that Adria wanted to tie a bow on the frog!  My boys aren't usually into that sort of thing.  :)
Errands
It was fun that one of our stops was to Bomgaars so we could see the baby chicks and turkeys.  Thankfully Mason didn't realize they were for sale!
Summer is coming
Enjoying sweet corn for supper made it feel like summer!
Pictures of Dorian's 3rd grade class!

The boys started taking lots of their projects home from school.
Following are Dorian's.

These are some of Levi's art projects.
Reward
I was SO hopeful that potty training Mason was done.  He enjoyed a reward of golf clubs from Walmart!  And now I'm wondering again when we'll be done with pull-ups...  So ready.

Landscaping
I love having a well-maintained yard and it's been fun watching everything turn green and flower this spring!
Nathan planted pumpkin and spinach seeds in our garden!  I planted herbs, tomatoes and peppers in pots!

I picked out new plants for this area since 3 of the 5 plants that were there had died.
I love the flower I picked out and potted for the front porch this year!

The rose bushes are blooming!
The hydrangia bushes that we trimmed in the Fall look great and I trimmed out all of the dead branches from the little tree by the deck.
Mason likes to help fill the bird feeder.  The birds love it so much, the seeds only last a couple of days!
After treating our birch tree (which was infested with bugs) last Fall, we were hopeful that we could save it.  But that wasn't the case.  A few branches looked ok, but the advice we were given suggested that it wasn't worth trying to save it anymore.  Nathan rented a chain saw and cut it down.  We all helped load up the branches and had it cleaned up by lunch time!

Memorial Day Weekend
A while back Nathan made a list of some things that he was hoping to do this summer and realized that he had to be very intentional if they were going to happen because our summer was already pretty full!  Thankfully the weather cooperated and he was able to take Dorian and Levi tent camping over Memorial Day!  They went to Blue Mounds State Park which is a place he had never been to before so they had fun exploring!  I met them for supper, smores and a hike on Sunday night and took Mason back with me.

Happy Memorial Day!  Breakfast by the campfire!
They found the herd of buffalo!

When they returned home on Monday, we set up our new trampoline!  I'm still feeling a little nervous about the possibility of them getting hurt...but it has been a fun way to spend their summer days at home so far!
Summer Vacation
These photos describe how Dorian and Levi felt on their last day of school on June 1.  Let summer vacation begin!!!

Celebrating with popsicles for a snack!
